CHURCH HISTORY

Mt. Zion and Bond Hill-St. Mark United Methodist Churches merged on May 5, 2002 to become New Vision United Methodist Church. The former Pastors of the two congregations, Rev. Jeannette Shegog and Rev. Norman Macon served as Co-Pastors of the new church until the arrival of Rev. Calvin Alston, Jr., former Pastor, North Orangeburg United Methodist Church, Orangeburg, SC, where he served for four years.

Bond Hill-St. Mark (1973-2002) was the result of a merger of the two churches. The first pastor was Rev. Odell Hill with Rev. Alonzo Vincent, Pastor of Marbly United Methodist Church, serving as Administrator. Rev. Samuel R. Wright was appointed Pastor on July 16, 1985. Rev. Norman Macon who served until the merger with Mt. Zion on May 5, 2002, followed him.

St. Mark (1923-1973) started as a Mt. Zion Methodist Church Mission in the East End. Many pastors served St. Mark, however it was Rev. George T. Brown who introduced the idea to move since East End provided little potential for growth. Howard Bond, District Superintendent, urged church leaders to seek a merger with Bond Hill. This was accomplished in 1973.

Mt. Zion (1887-2002) was organized by an inspired “Prayer Band”, who met from house, in 1882. The church was organized on February 6, 1887. Mt. Zion met at 1119 Lincoln Street before moving into the basement of the 865 Altoona Street building in 1924, under the leadership of Rev. Stanley E. Grannum. Early Pastors included George Bailey, E.J. Nicholls and H.W. Tate. Recent Pastors were Samuel R. Wright, Thurman McLean, Grayson Atha and Larry Clark.

Bond Hill (1886-1973) was organized on June 18, 1886 at the home of John Gilbert by Rev. John Laird, Pastor, Carthage Methodist Church. An addition was added to the church building 1n 1923 and a parsonage adjoining the church property was purchased in 1942. Rev. Earl Dunn was the last pastor of Bond Hill. Rev. Odell Hill was appointed in 1973 and the merger with St. Mark Methodist Church was the same year.
